Summary
EWEA saw some significant developments in 2013 with Thomas Becker becoming its new CEO, and Andrew Garrad the new President. The association developed a new strategy in order to reflect the changing nature and situation of the European wind industry, and to turn EWEA into a stronger industry association. EWEA developed a new strategy in order to:
- Be the voice and driver of the European wind industry
- Promote wind energy’s interests to decision-makers
- Coordinate the industry and support national associations
- Keep EWEA’s profile world-class
- Be the go-to source and provide key services for members
- Provide must-attend events for industry
Wind energy industry statistics:
- At the end of 2013 there were 117.3 GW of installed wind energy capacity in the EU: 110.7 GW onshore and 6.6 GW offshore.
- 11,159 MW of wind power capacity (worth between €13 bn and €18 bn) was installed in the EU-28 during 2013, a decrease of 8% compared to 2012
installations. - Wind power is the technology which installed the most capacity in 2013 out of all energy technologies: 32% of total power capacity.
- The wind power capacity installed by the end of 2013 would, in a normal wind year, produce 257 TWh of electricity, enough to cover 8% of the EU’s electricity consumption – up from 7% the year before.
