WindEurope response to European Commission’s consultation for guidance on grid connection queues management
The Commission plans on issuing a guidance document aimed at reducing grid connection waiting times, improving the management of connection requests, and addressing challenges related to grid capacity constraints. WindEurope has provided feedback on the Commission’s targeted consultation on this.
In the response main recommendation include:
- Call for stricter entry criteria to grid connection queues to prevent speculative projects from blocking capacity.
- Milestone-based tracking and financial guarantees to ensure only mature projects retain grid access.
- Fast-track procedures for minor grid connection modifications to reduce administrative burdens.
- Replacing the first-come, first-served model with prioritisation based on project maturity and system value.
- Need for transparent, harmonised hosting capacity maps to guide investment and improve planning.
- Promoting efficient grid use through hybridisation, repowering, and flexible connection agreements with clear rules.
