Mount Lucas wind farm showcases a successful partnership for STEM education

Nestled among the turbines of Mount Lucas Wind Farm in Ireland, the Mount Lucas Learning Hub has become a place where young people can experience renewable energy first-hand.

Since 2017, thousands of students have visited the centre to learn how wind energy works, explore the biodiversity around wind farms and discover the role renewable energy plays in everyday life. Through interactive activities and site visits, classroom lessons are brought to life in a unique learning environment.

A different way to learn

At the heart of the Learning Hub is a simple idea: students learn best when they can see, touch and experience things for themselves.

Every week, local students visit the centre to explore renewable energy through hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and encourage questions. The programme helps young people better understand wind energy while connecting STEM subjects to real-world applications.

Learning from a successful model

WindEurope and Wind Energy Ireland brought together a delegation of European policymakers, professionals from education NGOs, national policymakers from Ministries of Education, and industry representatives to visit Mount Lucas and see the initiative in action.

The visit showcased how collaboration between schools and industry can create engaging learning experiences and help inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians.
