RWE
2020 was an exciting year. The final step of one of the largest transactions in recent German industrial history has been undertaken and the new RWE has been completed. In the autumn of 2019, RWE acquired E.ON’s renewable energy activities, and in 2020 the last step was being taken by integrating innogy’s renewables business.
In 2020 RWE continued to expand its renewables business: the company commissioned more than 800 MW of renewable capacity.
Furthermore, RWE and Nordex SE have successfully completed the process of acquisition of Nordex’ European onshore wind and solar development platform by RWE. This comprised a development pipeline of in total 2.7 GW in France, Spain, Sweden and Poland.
Next to the wind, solar and storage business, RWE achieved important milestones for unlocking the potential of green Hydrogen. The company is one of the few to be involved in projects along the entire hydrogen value chain. RWE is for example driving forward what is currently Germany’s largest hydrogen project, GET H2. Together with partners, the company is currently planning an electrolyser with a generating capacity of 100 MW. In total, RWE is working with prominent partners from industry and the scientific community to drive forward more than 30 hydrogen projects in Germany, the Netherlands and UK.
Innovation has played a big role in 2020: RWE pushed forward 3 floating wind demonstration projects in Norway, Spain and the US. Together with its project partners, RWE tests innovative floating platform solutions for offshore wind turbines.
RWE Renewables is one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies. With around 3,500 employees, the company has onshore and offshore wind farms, photovoltaic plants and battery storage facilities with a combined capacity of approximately 9 gigawatts. RWE Renewables is driving the expansion of renewable energy in more than 15 countries on four continents. By the end of 2022, RWE targets to invest €5 billion net in renewable energy until 2022 and to grow its renewables portfolio to more than 13 gigawatts of net capacity. Beyond this, the company plans to further grow in wind and solar power. The focus is on the Americas, the core markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
