With the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the onshore wind energy sector adapted step by step to the changes demanded by the need to reduce the spread of the virus and to minimize the risk to health. Onshore wind technology has proven that it is a trusted technology which helps lead towards greener electricity generation and is both reliable and economic. Several independent studies in 2020 also confirmed once again that onshore wind is among the cheapest energy sources in the world.
Mindful policy actions kept the flow of goods and services moving throughout Europe during the first wave of COVID-19 and thus recognised renewable energies as a key part of energy production. Moreover, efficient and effective COVID-19-related economic support and recovery programs gave some assurance to the business ecosystem. Looking forward, we should not overlook the threat of climate change which has not stopped during the pandemic and so any stimulus and recovery packages must be in line with a green recovery. The Nordex Group is ready to play its part in this green transition.
During 2020 the Nordex Group set the goal of maintaining production at its sites and to continuing the installation of turbines where possible. The company also aimed to ensure the operation of turbines it covers under its service contracts to secure electricity production – all without compromising the fight against the pandemic or endangering its colleagues. Three examples of this are:
- The successfully completed 300 MW Dutch project, Wieringermeer, for its customer Vattenfall.
- In 2020, the Nordex Group installed the first N149/5.X as planned.
- Customer orientation in difficult times paid off.
Despite COVID-19, the Nordex Group last year received firm orders for a total of 1,331 wind turbines with an output of 6,020 MW, almost matching the Group’s high order intake of the previous year.
The Group, founded 1985, has installed more than 30 GW of wind energy capacity in over 40 markets. It employs a workforce of 8,400. The product portfolio is focused on onshore turbines up to the 5.X MW class.
