Session description
Australia has emerged as one of the most interesting offshore wind markets in the APAC area. The nation has a vast offshore wind resource and a Federal Government committed to realizing its potential.
In 2022, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Honourable Chris Bowen announced that the Government was seriously committed to offshore wind development and declared six offshore wind zones across Victoria, NSW, and WA.
Since then, Australia joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (becoming one of the first APAC nations to do so), opened up for the first feasibility licencing round in Gippsland Victoria (which closes on April 27) as well as kick started consultation for the next offshore wind zone in the Hunter Valley (which closes on April 28).
The majority of the world’s offshore wind developers have been active in Australia for some time and as the market starts to crystalize, the supply chain is beginning to plan how to service the market.
Victoria is spearheading Australia’s offshore wind development with the State Government announcing ambitious targets of at least 2 GW of offshore generation capacity by 2032, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040.
Offshore Wind Energy Victoria (OWEV), was created by the state government to serve as the peak body for offshore wind in the state. OWEV has already release two of three implementation papers that deal with traditional offshore wind road blocks like grid, ports, supply chain and procurement, which is providing the industry with a high degree of certainty around the state’s commitment to reaching its proposed targets.
This session will start with a presentation from Anh Mai, the Executive Director of Offshore Wind Energy Victoria who will provide a comprehensive overview as to the status of offshore wind in Victoria and the states plans for turning targets into turbines.
A panel session will follow OWEV’s presentation, where Anh will be joined by representatives from several of the world’s leading offshore wind developers who hope to play a leading role in Australia’s first offshore wind project. The panel will also look at how offshore wind and green hydrogen will work together in Australia.
