We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO265: Wind tunnel setup for validating wind farm control in varying wind directions

Vlaho Petrović, Senior Researcher, ForWind, University of Oldenburg

Abstract

Wake steering can be used to improve the overall performance of wind farms. Wake steering control models are developed in simulations, wind tunnels and in the free-field. To understand the performance of wake steering controllers in relation to dynamic wind direction changes, it is preferred to test different control strategies in a controlled environment. This contribution presents a new experimental setup for simulating wind direction changes at the wind tunnel of ForWind-University of Oldenburg, enabling fast and inexpensive validation of wind farm controllers in reproducible inflow conditions. Wind direction changes are sampled with 30 s from the field data, scaled and reproduced in the wind tunnel. The initial experiments with the wake steering controllers show promising results. With a yaw-controller based on a look-up table using the wind direction and the wind direction variability as an input, a power gain of 5.8% has been achieved in comparison to the 'greedy' controller. The presentation will include results evaluating a yaw control strategy while dynamically changing the turbine position to simulate the wind direction change.
