We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!
PO259: Offshore Wind Vessel Decarbonisation and The Charging Solution
Alistair Morris, Senior Offshore Wind Associate, Carbon Trust
Abstract
The drive to reduce emissions is a significant challenge faced by the offshore wind industry. There are several solutions in respect to fuel type available, with one of the leading solutions being the use of electric power. Electrification of commercial vessels is rapidly developing in the coastal transport sector (ferries, tugs, tour-boats) with a major break-through for offshore wind service vessels on the horizon. At present, the main showstopper for a roll-out of battery electric CTV's and later SOV's is limited range and the lack of offshore charging capabilities. Several offshore charging concepts are being developed but with no common standard for a charging interface between the vessel and the charging connection. Through the standardisation of the charging connection this helps to reduce technology uncertainty as well the associated costs. Development of charging solutions are progressing quickly and as a result standardisation of charging connectors was seen by the OWA as a key development need. The Offshore Charging Standardisation (OCS) project, which was run through the logistics and O&M workstream within the OWA was initiated to develop a universal electrical connector design for crew transfer vessel (CTV) charging.
