PO215: Prediction of surface erosion of wind turbine blades: machine Learning and finite element approaches

Antonios Tempelis, PhD student, DTU

Abstract

A problem of great importance for the wind industry is leading edge erosion. The rough surface that the eroded coating material leaves on the surface of the leading edge considerably limits the energy output of turbines. Most numerical studies focus on either modelling the time period until damage appears on the coating or modelling the effect of roughness on the aerodynamic efficiency. An attempt to link the two stages by modelling the evolution of roughness after the initial damage detection has been developed and applied for a Rain Erosion Test (RET) sample. The results are compared with roughness measurements from the sample. To extend this technique, the stochastic nature of droplet sizes during a rain event must be considered. For that purpose, a neural network-based surrogate model is used to predict the output of finite element simulations for different droplet sizes. The trained machine learning model is validated and can be applied to augment the current roughness prediction tool.
