PO209: CompactCool technology unlocking a new era for dry-type transformers
Müge Özerten, Global Product Marketing Manager, Hitachi Energy
Abstract
Hitachi Energy has introduced CompactCool Technology for renewables application that combines cooling mechanism of dry-type transformers and liquid-immersed transformers for optimized transformer footprint, reduced losses and high-power density. This new technology combines an advanced hybrid cooling mechanism where a liquid coolant is used inside of the coils of a dry-type transformer to extract the heat out of windings, which is later removed by the heat exchanger. The coolant liquid is only used for cooling and not for dielectric purpose. Dielectric insulation is provided by solid materials and air, similar to conventional dry-type transformers. The coolant is bio-degradable, with dielectric properties and also enhances cooling capacity, thanks to its higher convective coefficient and calorific capacities. One of the key aspects that causes the footprint difference between the dry-type and liquid-immersed transformers is the cooling mechanism involved. Optimizing this transformer cooling system can directly result in footprint reduction. CompactCool combines the benefits of both traditional transformers technologies, liquid-filled and dry: compact form factor and lower footprint of the liquid-immersed transformers along with safety and low maintenance values that a dry-type transformer delivers. Companies operating in the wind, solar and data center, space for instance, need transformers that can deliver safety, reliability and availability with the lowest possible footprint and maintenance. This represents a very competitive proposal in terms of CapEx and OpEx so as technical installation advantages. Total Operational Costs during lifetime and operation are lower compared to a traditional liquid-filled unit. CompactCool technology combines dry-type solid insulation with direct liquid cooling to deliver: - Up to 50% reduction in transformer footprint upon ratings - 98% reduction of cooling liquid - Up to 90% of the losses captured in extraction - Reduced power usage effectiveness (PUE) - Integration with central cooling systems and lower costs
