Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO177: Reducing Risks and Uncertainty on Early-Stage Energy Yield Assessments

Jon Lopez de Maturana Echevarria, Senior Wind Resource Specialist, Statkraft

Abstract

Nowadays, Wind Project Developers are prospecting sites where there is no on-site wind data, existing wind farms or limited knowledge about the potential wind resource. Wind Atlas and high-resolution reanalysis data could be a good starting point, but energy yield assessments are often too uncertain on this early stage. A five percent overestimation in wind speed generates twice an error on energy yield estimation and definitively, this will impact on project feasibility, but also on the credibility of the wind industry as a trustworthy contributor to the Energy Transition. Therefore, several questions are still open to the Wind Community: How the uncertainty on early-stage assessments could be quantified? How can we reduce the risk of focusing on areas where finally there is a large bias with respect to the predicted wind resource? Is it possible to identify in advance those areas where mesoscale products overestimate the final annual energy yield?
