Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO139: Offshore Wind RES platform: a support tool for offshore wind energy planning

Alberto Ghigo, PhD Student, Politecnico di Torino

Abstract

To encourage the development of offshore wind and to identify the most promising marine areas suitable for offshore wind installations, it is essential to resort to versatile and intuitive tools that, in addition to the wind availability, can assess constraints of different types, like the presence of maritime routes, fishing areas, protected natural areas, oil fields and military areas. Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Platform is made of different algorithms developed in Python, whose results have been implemented in an intuitive web interface where the user can visualize the average wind speed, the average power density and numerous layers like the bathymetry, natural areas, military areas, Oil&Gas facilities, shipping density and Exclusive Economic Zones. The operative diagram concerning the Offshore Wind RES platform is made of two steps: once the site has been chosen, it is possible to visualize representative graphs of the wind resource characteristics and download the hourly time series of each parameter. Then, after selecting one wind turbine among those available, it is possible to calculate the overall wind turbine productivity and to download the most probable combinations of wave height, wave period and wind speed for a considered site. Offshore Wind RES Platform can be used to evaluate the wind characteristics in a specific site, compare the wind resources concerning different locations, and then identify the best sites and areas for installation. Moreover, it can be used as support in the energy transition and decarbonization to favour offshore wind energy resource exploitation.
