Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO126: De-risking green hydrogen production from floating offshore wind - safe and healthy operations in challenging environments

Annette Nienhaus, Partner, Safety Services, ERM

Abstract

A significant challenge for offshore green hydrogen developments is the harsh environment in which they are operating. This is especially true as operations are moving further out to sea with the use of floating wind designs. The technical implications relate to motion, exposure to corrosive sea spray and operation in wide temperature ranges. Apart from this, there is a need for enhanced maintenance concepts to account for potential downtimes associated with innovative technologies as well as specific considerations for workforce health and safety in an environment that is characterized by the presence of classic offshore wind hazards as well as novel hazards introduced by the hydrogen facilities and the specific characteristics of floating wind turbines. Based on experience from typical offshore wind projects as well as the development and design of innovative concepts such as the ERM Dolphyn design for the production of green hydrogen from floating wind, we are looking at the main factors relevant for providing safe operating concepts and workplaces for floating offshore wind projects. This includes an analysis of potentially adverse effects, of key implications and measures to avoid or mitigate such effects across the lifecycle of a project development as well as the discussion of potential enhancing factors that contribute to equipment and workplace safety.
