PO110: Technology evolution that empowers grid integration of wind energy

Andreas Brandt, Global Product Manager for Medium Voltage Indoor Control and Protection Products, ABB

Abstract

Environmental concerns now shape business and procurement decisions. People and business need to understand how the product they are buying affects the environment and they want it to be reliable and truthful. Technology evolutions that we present in this paper supporting energy transition in a safe, smart and sustainable way. Smart is a new green. Grid integration of wind energy power in the network transmission utilities creates problems of voltage variations. This is due to the requirement that the power is to be utilized as and when generation is available from renewable power plant. Further, the uncertain and variable nature of the wind energy generations also affects the voltage quality in the network of utility grids. This can be mitigated by the optimal use of the reactive power compensation using for instance capacitors banks. Capacitor switch operation involves technical challenges like high frequency inrush cur-rents prestrike and restrike which all impact the lifespan of the assets connected to the network and its power quality. Circuit breakers designed for high power switching application, based on controlled switching technology are able to cope with capacitor banks in a way that increasing reliability and resiliency of the grid.
