Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics and provide an opportunity for delegates to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO109: Capacitive transfer system cable for efficient wind energy integration

Owen Johnson, Electrical Modelling Engineer, Enertechnos

Abstract

Ambition to reach Net Zero drives integration of wind power generation that is often in remote locations requiring new power transmission infrastructure. Construction of conventionally used overhead lines often meets high resistance from local communities and long time to receive consent, forcing networks and renewable energy developers to use underground cables more frequently and over longer distances. Cable transmission is more costly than overhead lines and less efficient over long distances. To address this challenge Enertechnos developed an innovative Capacitive Transfer System (CTS) that introduces distributed series capacitance in the cable, achieving lower voltage drop in the line and power losses. Enertechnos has developed a 33kV CTS cable solutions for wind farm connection. Results of a case study for connection of a 27MVA wind farm demonstrated significant benefits of the CTS solution against traditional cable (TC) of the same cable cross section for different loading scenarios. Summarising the benefits of CTS versus traditional cable: reduced voltage drop across the line, reduced reactive power transmitted allowing higher transfer capacity, reduced losses. Depending on the loading profile of the line the reduction of losses increases the revenue for a wind power generation company.
