PO101: Medium voltage grid stability: switching on/off wind turbine transformers

Nestor Ajuria, Global Renewable Energy Manager, Ormazabal

Abstract

New requirements are arising in the electrical network. The demand of green energy requires new functionalities that imply the management of big data to take the right decision at the right moment. Digitalised wind farms offer the possibility to manage almost infinite variables to boost asset productivity. Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear digitalisation is a key aspect as it can provide reliable information of the MV ecosystem, a critical aspect of a renewable energy power plant. The increase of the distributed generation power plants along the MV distribution and transport is becoming a challenge for Regulators, DNOs and TSOs. Planners need to build and maintain a more robust grid that can both anticipate the future in an interconnected system where energy producers and consumers coexist and develop protection and control systems that can eventually allow all the potential customers to carry out all the required energy transactions. The idea is to be connected 24/7/365. One of the issues planners will be facing is the grid instability caused by the connection and disconnection of power transformers of wind turbines, PV farms and EV point chargers for example. In order to solve the previous challenges new functionalities are implemented in the medium voltage switchgears.
