PO083: Hybrid wind and wave platform in MOST

Abstract

In this article, different integrated WEC and floating platform concepts are studied. The coupled dynamics, the structural behavior, and the energy production of the WEC and the wind turbine are analyzed. An in-house numerical model, named MOST, is used for this purpose. MOST is written in MatLab-Simscape environment and allows the user to evaluate the multi-body dynamics in six degrees of freedom using the Simscape libraries offered by WEC-Sim, developed by a collaboration between NREL and Sandia; the hydrodynamic properties of the bodies are obtained from Nemoh, an open-source software. The different concepts are compared based on the Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for a selected offshore site, and the forces measured at the tower base. The reference wind turbine is the DTU 10 MW with ROSCO controller. The WEC concepts examined in this article are the point absorbers and oscillating water column devices. The differences between the point absorber and OWC device with different geometries and the control logic are discussed. The LCOE, the impact on the tower's fatigue, and the platform's overall size are compared.
