Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please, join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!
PO078: CFD modelling of tilted rotors
Kisorthman Vimalakanthan, Aerodynamic Researcher, TNO - Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research
Abstract
Floating wind farm control strategies and downwind tilted rotors are promising topics for improving the efficiency of global wind power output. There are many unanswered questions regards to the operation of floating wind arrays and its potential benefits under the different tilt angles in the offshore environment. Different modeling methods offer a different balance between accuracy against performance. The low fidelity models that simulate windfarms using the conventional actuator disk provide very efficient means of computation, however, lack the versatility and the accuracy of the finite volume approach of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This work will present the results from investigating the benefit of tilted rotor array (3x3 of 10MW InnWind turbines) using a different order of CFD methods (FarmFlow: Parabolic RANS with conventional actuator disk, TNO-VBM: Full RANS solver with discretized actuator disk, SOWFA: LES solver with actuator line).
