PO055: Environmental and social sustainability of PPAs: Fair wind ahead for the energy transition
Marios Stanitsas, Power Originator, ABO WIND
Abstract
To align with climate change mitigation initiatives and to oblige on social responsibility objectives that enhance the value of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), a vast number of organizations agree upon purchasing green energy to meet their needs (Ghiassi-Farrokhfal, et al., 2021). In due course, renewable energy projects which deliver environmental and social benefits are of communal benefit to increase sustainability initiatives. Organizations must include social and environmental benefits in their PPA tenders and negotiations. To achieve sustainability goals and minimize the controversy threat, it is crucial to involve local communities efficiently and share the benefits. As a result, different tactics have been utilized in PPAs to incentivize organizations to undertake such offers (Mendicino, et al., 2019). Raising social and environmental benefits during negotiations and to prepare bidders by presenting opportunities for identifying and delivering benefits through the project, needs to be implemented. To achieve such an initiative, the authors use open-ended criteria to set the goals and provide flexibility for the practitioners to come up with solutions. The aim of this study is to propose a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) based method to assess the integration of the sustainability philosophy in wind PPAs. By utilizing the proposed approach to compare different PPA structures, the researchers aim to reveal the appropriate PPA scenario, to allow practitioners to make decisions towards sustainable practices.
