PO046: Public acceptance "in my backyard": What drives public acceptance of renewable energy projects?

Orlando San Martin, Senior Sustainability Advisor, Statkraft

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to characterize public acceptance for renewable energy developments and how the acceptance levels are influenced by different factors. First, we present public acceptance levels for renewable energy (onshore wind and solar) projects in 8 European countries and how it varies across countries and within countries. We produce regional maps showing within country variations in public acceptance indicators. Second, using an econometric model we study how different factors influence the public acceptance levels. Our investigation assesses public acceptance for renewable energy developments using primary data from a comprehensive opinion survey. The opinion survey -conducted in 2021- contains more than 16 000 observations from 8 European countries. This paper maps public acceptance for renewable energy -in 8 different countries- further disaggregated into 66 regions- and discusses the role of key factors such as: environmental and climate awareness, perceptions on different renewable energy sources, and benefit sharing schemes in shaping their public acceptance levels. The analysis of the information gathered for this investigation shows variations across European countries, but also within each of the countries covered by this study. The findings from this study might be useful to take into consideration during the planning and development of renewable energy projects and improve targeting the work towards community engagement aiming to obtain the social license to build and operate renewable energy projects.
