PO017: Transforming marine life monitoring with advanced technology solutions

Ka Henney-Cant, Products and Services Manager - OPG, Oceaneering International

Abstract

Environmental considerations and impacts should be at the forefront of the Europe Windfarm market, with an ambitious goal of 136 GW by 2030, as there will be a large step change in offshore operations. Windfarm construction activities and operations may disrupt the delicate ecosystem of marine life with negative impacts on migration, surfacing, nursing, breeding, feeding, or sheltering. The protection of marine life, our mission, is necessary to maintain and sustain precious ecosystems in the seas. Innovative solutions for marine life monitoring will be required to disrupt existing methodologies and equipment and to overcome current challenges (compromised protection of marine life, significant downtime, inefficient operations) as experienced during windfarm construction activities. The proposed presentation will detail a new, patented software solution that uses sensor-based fusion technologies and built-in AI for marine mammal detection. This platform of improved situational awareness safely and reliably expands the operational window to 24-hour operations while meeting various regulatory permitting requirements for marine life mitigation regimes. This integrated solution uses strategically placed sensors to assist Protected Species Observers (PSOs) in identifying marine life more accurately during daylight and nighttime operations as required for monitoring and exclusion zones. This solution not only increases the working window but ensures compliance by equipping PSOs with enhanced tools and delivers better data on marine life presence to regulatory bodies. In addition, the platform leverages remote operations and data streaming technologies, increasing collaboration with onshore experts in real-time. As with all innovative and disruptive technologies, the proper vetting and testing must be delivered to ensure the highest quality of marine life protection. This presentation will focus on the data collection and comparative analysis of traditional PSO monitoring methods versus the technologies of this integrated platform, a mission control center for marine mammal mitigation.
