PO004: Artificial intelligence for the prediction of failures in wind turbines

Rita Burnay, Director Consulting Expert - Energy & Utilities, Renewables, CGI

Abstract

The severe effects of climate change are raising awareness and concern about global environmental issues. In response, energy distribution companies are demanding a shift to renewable energy sources, such as wind. Wind turbines, however, are vulnerable to several external factors that cause mechanical failure. Repair is expensive and leads to downtime in energy production, significantly reducing the renewable energy transmitted to the electrical grid. Analysis reveals that implementing a prediction and monitoring system that detects and anticipates failures on wind assets has four clear advantages: 1. Reduces the number of overall failures 2. Lowers maintenance costs 3. Improves the longevity of components 4. Increases long-term profit from energy production We will explain how machine learning models can reliably predict common wind turbine technology faults before they lead to mechanical failure. This study used a year of data and 11 fault scopes collected across several wind turbine parks and multiple generator manufacturers.
