Europe has 30 GW of offshore wind today. “REPowerEU” envisages a huge expansion by 2030. National Governments are raising their 2030 offshore wind targets. The collective ambition of Europe’s national Governments on offshore wind for 2030 is now 165 GW.
Delivering 165 GW of offshore wind in Europe by 2030 requires a rapid increase in annual installation rates: from 3 GW pa today to 7 GW pa by the middle of the decade and over 20 GW pa from 2026.
To deliver these volumes, it’s vital that Europe’s offshore wind supply chain is scaled-up to meet our ambitions. There are already bottlenecks. Europe’s foundation manufacturers are fully booked for the next three years, and by 2024/25 Europe may experience its first shortages of cable and installation vessels. On top of this, the current turbine manufacturing capacity will be insufficient by 2026.
The expansion of wind energy requires forward-looking investments on all fronts. This Supply Chain workshop aims to bring together experts from across the offshore wind value chain to further discuss these challenges, along with the investment priorities, to ensure that the industry can meet the installation targets ahead.
