Congratulations to Henrik Andersen and Rasmus Errboe!

Henrik Andersen and Rasmus Errboe

Last week, the Board of WindEurope elected Henrik Andersen, CEO of Vestas, to be the new Chair of WindEurope. And they elected Rasmus Errboe, the CEO of Ørsted, as Vice-Chair.

Henrik and Rasmus will lead the wind industry’s engagement with Governments, other stakeholders and wider society in Europe for the next 18 months. They take up their roles at a critical moment for the energy transition in Europe and for Europe’s wider economic security.

Henrik Andersen said: “We are in a defining moment for Europe’s future. We need an industry and an energy source that can deliver home-grown, secure and affordable energy, while strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. Wind energy can contribute to all of this, and now is the time for Europe to bolster its wind industry. The European Commission and member states have set high targets, but this momentum must translate ambition into implementation. I am honoured to serve as Chair of WindEurope in this crucial time for Europe and for wind energy. I look forward to working closely with Vice Chair, Rasmus Errboe, and extend my thanks to the WindEurope members for trusting in me as your Chair for the coming eighteen months.”

Rasmus Errboe said: “I’m honoured to be elected Vice-Chair of WindEurope at a time where wind power is needed more than ever to provide energy security, support Europe’s competitiveness, and mitigate climate change. But the industry is challenged by rising costs, risks and a lack of long-term visibility needed for investment in the supply chain and large infrastructure projects. I will make it top of my agenda to work closely with industry and policymakers across Europe to address these challenges and ensure that wind energy delivers on Europe’s critical needs.”

Saipem launches Star1, its proprietary technology for floating offshore wind

Saipem launches Star1, its proprietary technology for floating offshore wind

Saipem, global leader in the engineering and construction of major projects for the energy and infrastructure sectors, has officially launched Star1, its floating offshore wind technology which was presented at the recent exhibition KEY – The Energy Transition Expo, in Rimini, Italy.

Star1 is a steel semi-submersible floating wind foundation shaped like a “star”— hence the name. It consists of three arms converging at the centre, where the tower is installed. It supports next-generation turbines, including those exceeding 20 MW. Thanks to its geometry and mooring system, Star1 offers remarkable stability in water, significantly minimising the stresses and movements of the turbine and optimising the loads on the mooring lines that anchor it to the seabed.

The technology is ready for the Front-End Engineering Design followed by Detail Design and its industrial-scale deployment. According to the recent assessment of the technology by DNV, Star1 is at an advanced stage of technical maturity and a full-scale prototype testing is not considered necessary to demonstrate bankability. In fact, Saipem has signed a strategic agreement with Divento for the utilisation of Star1 in the 7 Seas Med project in Sicily and the Ichnusa Wind Power project in Sardinia.

Furthermore, Star1 represents a significant step forward in technological innovation applied to the energy transition. This technology is the result of Saipem’s many years of experience in offshore engineering and demonstrates the company’s ability to work on innovative and sustainable solutions for the floating offshore wind market, in Italy and abroad, where Saipem can play a significant role.

With 2,500 MW of foundations built or installed by its own means in over 10 years of work in the offshore wind energy sector, Saipem is today an industry leader in Italy and worldwide. The company has engineering capabilities consolidated over 60 years of experience in EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation) projects for the traditional oil & gas energy sector and represents Italian engineering excellence worldwide. It operates a fleet of 17 construction vessels, including vessels dedicated specifically to offshore wind installations, such as the semi-submersible crane ship Saipem 7000, the third largest in the world. Saipem also runs 6 yards in 4 continents for the construction of offshore structures and foundations.

Saipem’s track record in offshore wind encompasses, among others, the installation of the world’s first floating wind farm, the Hywind project for Equinor in Scotland. The company has since completed several major fixed foundation wind farm installation campaigns in challenging environments such as the North Sea (Scotland, UK, France).

In its recently presented Strategic Plan, Saipem declared a target of approximately €50bn of new order acquisitions over the period 2025-2028, of which €3.5bn are expected in the offshore wind sector, equivalent to 7% of the total.
