WindEurope Bulletin
WindEurope Bulletin April 2022

4 April 2022
CEO Foreword
Dear Member,
To those of you already in Bilbao for our Annual Event this week, welcome. To those of you on your way or about to come, safe travels. To the rest of you I hope you’re well despite the continued trying times.
Over 8,000 people have already registered for the Bilbao event starting tomorrow 5 April. There’ll be over 330 companies exhibiting. As you may have seen, His Majesty the King of Spain is opening the event. And there’ll be Ministers from all over Europe taking part.
The event is all about energy security. Europe has decided no more Russian energy imports by 2030 at the latest – and that we need to accelerate the build-out of renewables to help deliver that. The EU has raised its 2030 target for wind energy (onshore and offshore combined) from 450 to 480 GW. It has 190 GW today.
The Bilbao event will focus on the challenges around how we deliver this: planning and permitting; supply chain bottlenecks; grid connections; improving market design; and attracting and training the workforce the industry needs. And on the opportunities: how wind can help electrify the energy system, benefit communities, regenerate deprived areas and preserve nature.
The conference will discuss all these issues. Then in the exhibition a Global Markets Theatre will look at export opportunities. There’ll be a Startup Pavilion. A LearnWind Area will cover education and skills. And a WindTalks for Innovation stage will showcase the latest technology. There’ll also be a number of social and side events.
Ministers from Spain, Germany, the UK, Portugal, Romania and Lithuania will be taking part. Together with the Director-General for Energy in the European Commission and other leading EU officials. Plus CEOs from wind and the rest of the energy sector, key players from industries that want to consume more wind – and leading financial institutions.
As Germany’s Finance Minister said recently, “Renewable Energy is Freedom Energy”. Bilbao is a chance to shape the future of wind, the wider energy system and to map out a route to energy independence for Europe. And it’s a great opportunity to pull together as an industry in the face of today’s unprecedented challenges. I look forward to meeting with many of you over the next few days.
Now, one other big thing this week. We have a new Chairman. The WindEurope Board has today elected Sven Utermöhlen, CEO Offshore Wind, RWE, as our Chair for the next 18 months. As many of you will know, he’s a highly experienced and researched figure in the industry, and it’s great that he’s taken on the role. The Board also elected Kresten Ørnbjerg of Vestas as the new Vice-Chair of the Association. We’re delighted to have Sven and Kresten at the helm.
A quick look ahead to the next few months. WindEurope’s Technology Workshop on Resource Assessment and Analysis of Operating Wind Farms will take place from 23-24 June in Brussels. It’ll tackle the question of energy security from the technology angle – now more than ever there is a need to strengthen the yield, efficiency and performance of wind farms. Registration will open soon. Then our Annual General Assembly will take place in Brussels on 29 June, and will be followed by a charity event in the garden of our office for the people of Ukraine.
Kind regards,
Giles Dickson

Events
WindEurope Annual Event 2022
When: 5-7 April
Where: Bilbao
WindEurope 2022 (5-7 April) is the annual conference and exhibition of the European wind energy industry. 8,000 people will be there and more than 330 companies are exhibiting.
This event comes at a decisive moment for energy in Europe. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has upended the energy system. Europe is pursuing a new energy policy: less dependence on imported fossil fuels; and an accelerated transition to renewables. The EU now wants wind energy to grow from 190 GW today to 480 GW by 2030. The Bilbao event will focus on how to deliver this: tackling the barriers that need to be overcome e.g. around permitting, but also highlighting the opportunities, notably for jobs and communities.
Ministers and policymakers from around Europe will be taking part, including the Director-General for Energy in the EU Commission and Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Teresa Ribera. And there’ll be leading players from the wind industry, finance, academia and elsewhere. Here’s the full list of speakers.
Alongside the conference, there’ll be exhibition areas dedicated to start-ups, technology, skills & education, recycling and export opportunities in global markets. There’ll be meetings with the military, biodiversity NGOs and other key stakeholders. There’ll also be a workshop on renewables in Ukraine and various fund-raising activities for Ukrainians. Plus a range of social and side events.
It’ll be a key gathering – at a time when wind energy really needs to step up and help deliver energy security for Europe.
Technology Workshop 2022
When: 23-24 June
Where: Brussels
This year’s edition of WindEurope’s Technology Workshop on Resource Assessment and Analysis of Operating Wind Farms gets underway here in Brussels on 23-24 June.
With energy security being prioritised in the wake of the war in Ukraine, support for technological R&I has never been more important. We will be looking at three areas of interest in particular:
- Wind resource assessment – improving accuracy to strengthen your business case;
- Analysis of operating wind farms – getting the most out of your operational data; and
- Artificial intelligence, business models and forecasting – enabling new approaches and solutions.
This is a chance to network with over 350 professionals from Europe and beyond, showcase your expertise, and hear about innovative solutions to problems that you may be facing.
Registration for this will open soon – we will keep you updated.
