Interview with Pascal Grosjean, Equans
Can you tell our readers a little about your organisation?
Equans is your multi-technical expert serving the energy, digital and industrial transitions. We are world leader in energy and (technical) services, delivering innovative and sustainable solutions. With operational bases in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK, we have successfully delivered 32 AC offshore substations, contributing 11 GW of total capacity to the European market.
Our expertise covers the entire lifecycle of high-voltage substations, from engineering and construction to commissioning, maintenance, and decommissioning. We design and integrate HV/MV/LV and auxiliary systems in-house and leverage a trusted network of partners when needed. Our dedicated Design & Engineering Department leverages over 15 years of experience in offshore wind to provide systematic and creative solutions that address unique challenges. Equans continues to lead in providing turnkey solutions tailored to meet the growing demands of the offshore wind industry.
What are the most exciting developments you have seen in the wind industry?
The offshore wind industry is at the forefront of the energy transition, and the advancements we see today are nothing short of transformative. The rapid adoption of new technologies – such as robotics and automation – is especially exciting. For instance, robotic maintenance solutions like the ones Equans is developing in partnership with ANYbotics, a leading provider of advanced robotics technology, are changing the way offshore assets are managed, making operations safer and more efficient.
Moreover, Europe’s commitment to ambitious renewable energy targets has created unprecedented momentum in the sector, fostering innovation and scaling projects across the North Sea and Baltic regions. The growing demand for integrated service solutions reflects the industry’s evolution toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
What changes would you like to see in the wind industry?
To support sustainable growth, the wind industry needs to adopt a more balanced approach to risk-sharing. Current contracts often place disproportionate risks on contractors, which can hinder collaboration and resilience. Developers and contractors must work together to create fair agreements that allow all stakeholders to thrive, even in the face of uncertainties. Additionally, increased standardisation in substation design and engineering would simplify processes, reduce costs, and streamline project execution, making the industry more efficient overall.
The adoption of digitalisation and automation is another critical area for improvement. Advanced technologies can enhance efficiency, reliability, and long-term sustainability, helping the industry meet Europe’s ambitious decarbonisation targets under the Green Deal. At the same time, addressing workforce shortages through training and attracting new talent is essential for ensuring the industry’s growth. By focusing on these changes, the wind sector can overcome challenges and continue driving the transition to a low-carbon future.
Going forward, what role do you see your organisation playing in the future development of wind energy?
As a multi-technical expert, Equans is positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of wind energy. We are focused on driving service innovation through advanced technologies like robotics, predictive maintenance and digital solutions. These innovations not only improve efficiency but also contribute to the safety and sustainability of offshore operations.
Our commitment to supporting the energy transition aligns with Europe’s decarbonisation goals, and we aim to remain at the forefront of offshore wind developments by delivering high-value, comprehensive services. Equans will continue to provide and develop the expertise and innovation necessary to support the sector’s growth.
How has WindEurope membership benefited your organisation?
WindEurope has been instrumental in strengthening our visibility within the wind energy sector. As a member, Equans benefits from unparalleled opportunities for collaboration, networking, and staying ahead of market trends. These connections allow us to continuously refine our offerings, ensuring they align with industry needs. Our membership reinforces our leadership position in delivering solutions for offshore wind farms.
If we look ten years ahead, what do you hope to have achieved?
In the next decade, Equans envisions cementing its role as a multi-technical leader in offshore wind services.
