Session description
As the wind energy industry matures, decisions are increasing required as to whether operating wind turbine should have their lifetimes extended or whether a site should be repowered with the latest machines. This session will consider the pros and cons of the options, how wind turbine lifetimes and be safely extended and the economic risks and benefits.
Learning objectives
- Explain how the measurement of fatigues can be used to assess and manage wind turbine lifetime extension
- Show how the levelized cost of energy can be assessed when extending lifetime whilst taking into account the degradation in performance in contrast to the option of repowering
- Demonstrate the importance of codes of practice to ensure the safe extension of turbine lifetimes
- Examine the financial risks involved in both repowering and lifetime extension
