Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO136: Subsea power transmission for offshore wind developments - a significant cost savings driver

Egil Birkemoe, Vice President, Electrical Transmission, Aker Solutions

Abstract

To date all floating offshore wind farms have been small wind farms close to shore or consumers like O&G installations. Going forward with larger wind farms offshore export systems are required. The number of turbines also drives the need for standardization and risk reduction in the project execution phase as well as in the operational phase. During case studies, a need has been identified to potentially move away from daisy chain configuration with array cables to a star configuration. A product is under development to enable the star configuration: Subsea collector with connection of 66kV power and fiber communication. It can be fitted with intelligence to open up for required functionality to pre-install the complete power system and add subsea transformers for transmission to shore on higher voltages up to initially 220kV. The presentation will focus on the installation methods and savings for a power transmission system EPCI delivery and maintenance in operational phase. Aker Solutions with partners DeepOcean and Solstad Offshore in the Windstaller Alliance have done this in a collaborative manner. The subsea collector and subsea transformer products are development between Aker Solutions and ABB. The key is a simple robust system which only require one dynamic cable with a standardized limited cross section going to each wind turbine floater at the same time it can transmit over an export cable at initially 220kV.
