Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO120: Next generation dynamic subsea cables for floating wind

Audun Johanson, R&D Project Manager & New Opportunities, Nexans

Abstract

Are we ready to bring gigawatt's of floating wind power to shore? The technical solutions for transmission of commercial scale power production from floating arrays to shore is still in its infancy. Current 66 kV dynamic cables as well as the complete lacking of dynamic export cable technology is a significant threat to the future of floating wind cost. While key-technology gaps such as the 132 kV dynamic cables are all but closed, further innovations will still play an crucial part in driving down the cost. These include raising the AC and DC voltage level beyond 220 kV to facilitate floating substations, HV accessories or enabling the use of aluminium for dynamic cables. We here evaluate various array and export transmission architectures, including 132 kV direct-to-shore, and associated cable designs in light of technical feasibility and innovation potential. Altogether to reduce cost and environmental footprint of the floating wind transmission system.
