Session description
While increasing shares of renewables require the modernisation and upgrade of the current grid infrastructure, many grid projects are delayed for various reasons: from issues in the permitting procedure to financing reasons or changes in legislation. At the same time, missing grid infrastructure is more and more used as a scapegoat for less ambitious renewables expansion targets and a lack of political support. In this context, the Renewables Grid Initiative (a unique collaboration of transmission system operators and environmental NGOs) and WindEurope will use this session to discuss how to better coordinate grid and wind investments.
Learning objectives
- How can we ensure a better coordination between investments in wind energy (and other RES generation) and transmission capacity?
- How can the grid and wind sector collaborate to gain societal support for both generation and transmission projects?
- How does the current planning of grid and wind asset investments (or the lack of it) affect the viability and financing of wind and transmission assets?
- How can investments in grids and wind be shaped to increase local benefits?
