How will the wind industry fully leverage the digital revolution?

High-level & plenaries

When: Wednesday, 26 September 2018, 9:15 - 10:30
Where: Room: Brussels

Session description

Digital technologies have transformed the way we live, the way we shop, the way we travel, even the way we date. The wind industry is also embracing digital technologies: turbines generate vast amounts of data that can be used to streamline operations and maintenance, boost performance, and enable substantial costs reductions through efficiency gains. Digital technologies facilitate the integration of more wind power into the grid and change the way energy is being traded, with the rise of cryptocurrencies and higher-frequency trading. Progress in artificial intelligence and automation are also opening new perspectives. But this has not yet translated into a fundamental change of the industry’s ways of doing business. Data ownership remains a focal point for discussion, and many innovative ideas and technologies using data have yet to be deployed on a larger scale. Cybersecurity is also emerging as a critical issue, as cyberattacks on energy infrastructure become more frequent. This session will set the scene for a day of discussions and exchanges on the potential of digitalization to transform the industry and its business models, and explore how the wind industry can fully leverage the digital revolution.
