Session description
By converting renewable electricity into hydrogen or synthetic gas, Europe could store renewable energy and transport it using existing gas infrastructure and then restitute it as power (via fuel cells) or heat as needed. Doing so, would address the variability nature of renewable energy production. Whilst Power-to-X applications have a lower energy efficiency than the direct use of electricity, these offer the advantage of relying on a well-developed infrastructure to store and transport energy. But for this to happen, Europe needs to overcome several challenges – both technical and regulatory. This session will look at the latest developments in this area and at possible ways to accelerate the transition.
