Overview
Europe now has more than 311 GW of wind power capacity, 270.5 GW onshore and 40.9 GW offshore. The EU-27 accounts for nearly 252 GW of the total installed capacity, 228.4 GW onshore and 23.2 GW offshore.
We expect Europe to install 148 GW of new wind power capacity over 2026-2030 (including the 8.8 GW installed in H1 2026). The EU-27 should install 111 GW of this – 22 GW a year on average. This would bring total installations in Europe and the EU to 436 GW and 342 GW respectively by 2030.
Findings
Europe installed 8.8 GW of new wind capacity in H1 2026 (gross installations). Onshore wind made up 74% of new installations for a total of 6.5 GW. Germany led additions (3.4 GW), followed by the UK (789 MW) and Spain (612 MW).
Five countries awarded support to a total of 17.2 GW of wind energy capacity in H1 2026 - 8.8 GW for onshore wind and 8.4 GW for offshore wind. Governments in Europe plan to auction support to more than 24 GW of wind energy capacity in the second half of 2026.
The capital raised for new wind projects in Europe was €9bn in H1 2026. This financed 5.2 GW of new capacity which will be installed over the next few years, including 4.5 GW onshore and 0.6 GW offshore.
Europe saw 10.6 GW of firm turbine orders in the first six months of 2026: 7.8 GW for onshore and 2.8 GW for offshore turbines. This is 12% lower compared with the 12 GW ordered in H1 2025.
We expect installations over 2026-2030 to take the EU to 342 GW and Europe to 436 GW of total installed capacity by 2030.
