Overview

This autumn update outlines the latest data for wind energy in Europe and our expectations for the rest of the decade. Europe now has 291 GW of wind power capacity, with 254 GW onshore and 37 GW offshore. The EU-27 has 236 GW of wind power capacity.
The EU is expected to build 22 GW of new wind farms annually from 2025 to 2030 which will take its cumulative installed capacity to 344 GW but has a target of 425 GW by 2030.

Findings

1

Europe installed 6.8 GW of new wind power capacity in the first half of 2025 (gross installations). Onshore wind made up 89% of the newly added capacity for a total of 6 GW. The EU-27 added 5.3 GW of the capacity added in Europe over the same period.

2

The EU is expected to build on average 22 GW of new wind farms annually from 2025 to 2030. This would take the EU to 344 GW by 2030. The EU 2030 target is 425 GW. We expect Europe's total installed wind power capacity to reach 441 GW by 2030.

3

Europe ordered 11.3 GW of new wind turbines in H1 2025. This was 19% up on H1 2024. The 11.3 GW breaks down 8.8 GW onshore and 2.5 GW offshore.

4

Europe took €34bn of Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) in new wind farms in H1 2025. This is already more than the total investment in 2024. There were six investments in offshore wind farms in the first half of 2025.

5

Europe’s governments awarded 11.7 GW of new wind capacity in auctions in H1 2025: 10.7 GW onshore and 1 GW offshore. This is less than the volume awarded in H1 2024, 20.1 GW including the outcome from the UK’s yearly renewable energy auction, expected to take place only in the second half of 2025.
