We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!
PO306: Lightning protection system inspection by drone
Christopher Udell, Head of Business Development, Voliro AG
Abstract
Do you know the condition of your LPS system? Aerial robots enable a ground-breaking method for inspecting Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) in order to allay these doubts. There are three main issues with lightning: more turbine downtime in the expanding renewable energy sector, rising turbine heights, and the possibility of more powerful lightning strikes as a result of climate change. With turbine heights likely to reach previously unheard-of heights, lightning strikes will be more commonplace and LPS inspection is therefore becoming more and more important. The approach of aerial robots is incredibly efficient, measuring the LPS full-loop resistivity on a turbine in compliance with relevant standards can be finished in as little as 20 minutes as opposed to almost a day for traditional rope inspections. This presentation aims to provide an overview of the key findings from the 2023 inspection season performed with Voliro T aerial robots, focusing on the notable patterns seen in LPS inspections.
