So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!
PO287: Partnering to produce one of the world's largest and safest wind turbines on the market: How the Sentric Safety Group contributed to a complete and globally compliant wind turbine interlocking solution for ultimate on-site safety.
Mélissa Djarmouni-Vallet, EMEA - Energy Sales Manager, Sentric Safety Group
Abstract
As the world turns to renewable energy at speed, with net zero deadlines fast approaching, wind turbine manufacturing & installation has become more and more pressing. But as manufacturing accelerates, it's important that we do not forget the many critical safety challenges associated with wind turbine production. Wind turbines have many points of hazard, all of which need to be made safe to protect workers. However, wind turbines are made by OEMs with different elements being created by varied manufacturers to produce the final turbine. Often these different manufacturers will implement safety systems separately, meaning they don't all work together, or they can have safety issues between the different points of application. This then requires a re-coding of the trapped key interlocks / LOTO system or updating of the safety systems once the turbine is pieced together. In the worst-case scenario, it can even jeopardise the wind turbine safety once installed onshore or offshore, possibly leading to difficult maintenance operations or on-site replacement which can be very costly. The possibility of accidents remains a valid concern. Applications per turbine, including 50 interlocks: * Hub and Front roof access * Power Box and Generator AirGap access * Rotor - Pin lock * AirGap[LH1] doors * Damper ladder * Transformer Room * Converter * Lift and platforms in tower A key customer of Sentric developed one of the world's largest wind turbines for offshore use and adopted a global approach for safety solutions. They worked with us to make it the safest wind turbine on the market. By working with a TKI specialist from the outset of the project to coordinate across all the different components and safety systems from various third parties involved, a holistic solution with compatible interlocks provided by us ensured that they would all work together with no compromise on the safety.
