PO221: Influence of wind gusts on aeroelastic loads of NREL 5MW wind turbine.

Abstract

This study utilizes blade-resolved computational fluid dynamics simulations to investigate the aero-elastic loads experienced by a yawed NREL 5MW wind turbine subjected to both full and partial wind gusts. Additionally, a novel spatial distribution methodology for generating gusts, suitable for large eddy simulations, is introduced. The study presents iso-surfaces of velocity magnitude for various gust scenarios and reports on the resultant turbine loads and power generation. Notably, it observes that partial gust impacts induce significant power fluctuations due to imbalanced blade loads across the rotor plane.
