Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in the academic community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PO147: Techno-economic model for optimal dispatch of green hydrogen and ammonia plants

Carlos Albero Fuyola, Market Area Manager Iberia, DNV

Abstract

During 2023 we have seen lots of developments in the renewable area to be linked to hydrogen generation. The link of the energy pricing to a low-price hydrogen is immediate, as 70% of the cost price is energy cost. Beyond the pricing the complementarity of wind resource and solar resource to obtain a baseload capability to serve the electrolyzers, and the requirements from the Haver Bosch process to keep the process ongoing, are hard to be matched. In addition, there is the dimension of the grid connection. Massive projects of several gigawatts are being developed in different countries with a very poor or inexistent grid. Making a vast project of renewable power, wind and solar, perform without a strong grid connection is a massive challenge. Frequency and voltage control, and moreover black start capabilities, are required so the renewable assets are operational. Curtailment due to the lack of complementarity in some cases, may need to be mitigated either using pure curtailment strategies, or with storage systems that may have a double role of keeping the grid conditions in island mode, and absorb the potential excess of renewable energy. Economies of scale to ensure a suitable price for energy generation, plus the requirements build a framework under which several gigawatts of projects are being developed, and their performance will have a massive impact on the market.
