Session description
Sector coupling, the connection of electricity and heating/cooling, is a promising approach to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix while maintaining a stable and reliable grid. Technological solutions on the demand side include batteries, electric vehicles, as well as heat pumps and electric/thermal storage in buildings and industrial processes. But these available technologies remain widely unused, in particular in buildings. Frequently cited reasons include: lack of familiarity with possible solutions; absence of demand-side flexibility from traditional business models; weakness of incentives to change business models; lack of interoperability of different technologies to allow for automatic grid optimisation. This session will present the main concepts and introduce examples of operational projects which could enable a faster deployment in the industry.
