Cable stabilisation with screw-piles: simplified offshore logistics can significantly reduce risk, cost, and environmental impact in cable protection

Henrik Bang-Andreasen, CEO and Founder, Portunus Solutions

Abstract

In our recent research, we have focused on developing and validating innovative techniques to penetrate scour-protection using screw-piles. This study addresses a critical challenge in the marine construction phases of offshore wind projects, where effective and economical solutions are essential for sustainable development. Scour-protection is a vital component in offshore wind installations, designed to prevent erosion around the foundations of wind turbines. Traditional methods of penetrating scour-protection often involve complex and costly procedures, which can hinder the efficiency of construction processes. Our research aims to overcome these challenges by introducing screw-piles as a viable alternative. Through a series of controlled experiments and field tests, we have demonstrated that screw-piles can effectively penetrate various types of scour-protection materials. The results indicate that this method not only ensures structural stability but also significantly reduces installation time and costs. By optimizing the design and installation techniques, we have achieved a balance between performance and practicality. The implications of our findings are far-reaching. Implementing screw-piles in offshore wind projects can streamline the construction phases, leading to more efficient project timelines and reduced financial burdens. This advancement opens up new possibilities for the offshore wind industry, enabling developers to adopt more sustainable and cost-effective practices. Additionally, the use of screw-piles simplifies offshore logistics, reduces risks associated with traditional methods, and significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Our work contributes to the broader goal of enhancing the viability of renewable energy sources. By improving the methods used in offshore wind construction, we are paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. We believe that our research will inspire further innovations in the field and encourage the adoption of screw-piles as a standard practice in marine construction.
