PO480: EHS audits that matter: strategic enablers of safe and sustainable operations in the renewables sector.
Annette Peters, Principal Consultant, ERM
Abstract
As the renewables sector accelerates its growth to meet global decarbonization goals, the role of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) auditing is undergoing a strategic transformation. Traditionally viewed as a compliance checkpoint, EHS audits are now being reimagined as catalysts for performance improvement, risk mitigation, and business value creation. We present insights from multi-source research—including ERM’s 2024 global health and safety survey, qualitative data from an EHS Gap Assessment of an Onshore Wind Park Repowering Site, and benchmarking studies on EHS auditing—highlighting how audit programmes are evolving for the main industry sectors, including renewables. Renewables organizations are investing heavily in health and safety, with a projected 51% increase over the next three years—outpacing other sectors. To support this development and ensure good EHS performance, it is essential to establish a robust audit system that not only serves as a control mechanism but also supports risk management, and performance improvement and long-term value creation. However, challenges persist across sectors: audits often lack integration with strategic decision-making, root cause analysis is inconsistently applied, limited cross-functional engagement and digital tools are underutilized. We explore how renewables companies can shift from reactive compliance to proactive risk management by embedding audit insights into enterprise strategy, leveraging advanced technologies such as AI and digital platforms, and fostering a culture of coaching over policing. The case study of an onshore wind repowering project in Germany illustrates how targeted gap assessments can enhance compliance, reduce liabilities, and support ISO 45001 alignment.
