PO445: Integrating foundation feasibility and costing into early-stage offshore wind planning

Edvald Edvaldsson, CTO, Youwind

Abstract

Early-stage offshore wind project development often prioritizes wind resource and layout optimization, while foundation feasibility is deferred to later design stages. This approach risks overlooking bathymetry and seabed constraints, leading to costly rework and suboptimal foundation technology selection.  This work presents an integrated approach where foundation selection is included in early-stage offshore wind development through the Youwind platform. The platform combines wind resource assessment with bathymetry, seabed data, and foundation cost modelling to generate optimized layouts that reflect both energy yield and foundation feasibility.  The methodology combines GIS data layers of bathymetry and soil type with foundation cost models. Feasible foundations are automatically assigned to each turbine location based on site conditions and considering the most cost-effective solution. Cost implications of these assignments are directly reflected in financial metrics such as Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX), ensuring that layouts are evaluated against both engineering feasibility and economic performance.  Applying this integrated approach at an early stage delivers faster project screening, reduced design iterations, and more realistic scenarios for both bottom-fixed and floating foundations. The method identifies the most suitable technology per location upfront and visualizes the results through marker maps combining bathymetry, soil type, and total foundation cost.   As a result, the methodology enables developers to evaluate design choices holistically, considering wake effects, LCOE, and foundation technology in a single optimization environment. Embedding foundation feasibility into early optimization workflows allows for smarter, faster, and more bankable decision-making, ultimately reducing risks and costs.
