PO434: Innovations in wind turbine gearbox design: advancing torque density for compact future drivetrains through further optimized components and materials, collaborative engineering, and rigorous system-level validation

Andreas Klein, VP DriveSystems & Head of Engineering, Flender GmbH

Abstract

The focus of Winergy‘s technology developments within the last two years has been inventing and optimizing an advanced gearbox prototype for future wind turbine drivetrains. These systems are characterized by compact and lightweight designs, which aim to maximize energy output and enable further growth of wind turbines. A central innovation in this field is the increased torque density, which allows the same power to be delivered in a smaller space or more power in the same space through intelligent designs, new technologies and advanced materials. This progress has been achieved through the further optimization of planetary stage layout, the enhancement of bearings and gears for improved durability, as well as the application of advanced materials with induction hardening for added strength and longevity. All these technologies are pushed to their limits and realized in one prototype to demonstrate the functionality and reliability at the system level. Rigorous testing, supported by detailed analysis, was done to validate the performance and durability of the new technologies and ensure the high Winergy quality standard. Engineering teams from Germany and Finland combined their know-how and this teamwork has been instrumental in setting new industry standards, paving the way for more efficient energy production and redefining future drivetrain systems. These developments not only highlight the technological advancements being made but also underscore the importance of collaborative innovation in addressing industry challenges and meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.
