PO431: Smarter turbine selection and layout refinement for offshore wind projects

Abstract

When planning offshore wind farms, development organizations often run separate studies for energy yield, losses, and uncertainties. By separating these processes it can be more challenging to see the full picture. We present a Python-based framework that brings these steps together in a single, consistent process. It is built on open-source tools, making it faster and more adaptable than commercial applications. Because it is open, the framework can also be combined with other modules, such as internally developed inter-array cabling optimization routines, and the software has capacity for future extensions like machine learning or updated cost models. The framework allows fair comparisons between different turbine models under the same site conditions. Instead of asking only “which turbine produces more energy?”, it shows how the answer changes when the losses, risks, and even costs are considered. It also supports optimizing layouts within project constraints, helping project developers choose both the right technology and a more efficient layout design.
