Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO425: Destination Earth based High-Resolution Wave and Vessel Icing Forecast to support offshore wind energy industry

Aleksi Nummelin, Research Professor, Finnish Meteorological Institute

Abstract

Accurate forecasts of metocean conditions are essential for planning safe and efficient offshore wind farm operations and service - as well as to all marine operations. We present a prototype, openly available, system that dynamically downscales ECMWF’s Weather-Induced Extremes Digital Twin (Extremes DT) to deliver short-term, high-resolution (~1 km) forecasts of ocean waves and vessel icing in the Barents Sea. Our aim is to provide actionable guidance for offshore wind farm operations and planning, shipping, and emergency response in the Barents Sea. The workflow extends the open-source DNORA framework to automate the creation of the operational setup and can be easily deployed to new regions. The system employs the state-of-the-art spectral wave model WAVEWATCH III, configured with advanced source-term physics and wave-ice interactions, as well as the Marine Icing model for the Norwegian COast Guard (MINCOG) vessel icing code. We assess the forecast skill against satellite observations and demonstrate the added benefit of the high resolution in comparison to the ECMWF standard wave forecast during extreme Arctic weather, including cold air outbreaks and polar lows.
