PO100: The impact of high ambient temperature on wind turbine performance

Abstract

The transition toward a more sustainable energy mix requires integrating a wide range of renewable energy sources. Shagaya wind farm, which has been operational since 2017, has demonstrated that wind energy is one of Kuwait’s most promising options as a renewable energy source. The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of high ambient temperatures during the hot summer months on wind turbine performance. During the summer months in Kuwait, the ambient temperature frequently exceeds 45 °C, which is above the operational limits of commercially available wind turbines. The collected real-world operational data from the Shagaya wind farm shows that wind turbine performance is negatively affected by high ambient temperatures. During the hot summer days in Kuwait, wind turbines often operate at a reduced capacity, a condition known as derated mode. On extremely hot days, wind turbines must go into shutdown mode to avoid potential damage and ensure safety. The processed real-world operational data show that wind turbines in the Shagaya wind farm operated in a derated or shutdown mode for extended periods during the summer days. Furthermore, during the hot summer days, high wind speeds negatively affect wind turbine performance due to increased internal heat generation. The combination of high ambient temperatures and the increase in internal heat generation presents a unique challenge for wind turbines operating in Kuwait. These findings highlight the challenges and limitations of wind turbines operating in hot climates and the need for innovative solutions in order to unlock the full potential of wind energy in Kuwait.
