PO044: Underwater Noise Mitigation Modelling for Offshore Pile Driving

Yaxi Peng, Senior acoustic consultant, Co-founder, Delft Cymatics

Abstract

Offshore wind farm development relies heavily on impact pile driving, a process that generates intense underwater noise with potential adverse effects on marine life. Effective noise mitigation is therefore essential to meet regulatory requirements and minimise environmental impacts. This work presents the development and application of computational models for predicting underwater noise and evaluating mitigation during offshore pile driving. The modelling framework integrates source characterisation, wave propagation in complex marine environments, and the performance of mitigation measures, with emphasis on bubble curtains and alternative technologies. Model predictions are validated against field measurements, confirming their reliability in capturing both source levels and mitigation effectiveness under realistic conditions. Results highlight the influence of site-specific factors, such as seabed composition and hydrodynamic conditions, on mitigation performance. The findings provide a robust scientific basis for the design and implementation of noise mitigation strategies in offshore construction, supporting environmental impact assessments and the protection of marine ecosystems.
