Biography

Niels Anger is Head of European energy transition and EU energy legislation at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. His focus is on EU renewable energy policy and the EU 2040 energy framework. Furthermore, he is coordinating Germany’s cross-border renewable energy cooperation policy, in particular in the area of offshore wind in the North and Baltic Sea region. From 2014 to 2017 he was Policy Officer at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy, where he coordinated the Commission's legislative initiative on the Governance of the Energy Union. Niels earned a Ph.D. in Economics in 2009 and published several research articles on energy and climate policy. From 2004 to 2009 he was Research Fellow at the Department of Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). Niels is Economist by training and visited the Columbia Business School, the Universities of Mannheim and Bayreuth as well as the Ponitifícia Universidad Catolica del Perú.
