PO220: Thunderstorm Alert System granting people's safety and wind turbines downtime efficiency
Sergio Castillo Pérez, Meteorology Specialist, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy
Abstract
Thunderstorms are one of the most dangerous meteorological risks that Wind Turbines (hereafter, WT) are exposed to. Lightning strikes may hit the blades as well as occur when field teams are working on the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) tasks. The Weather and Energy Forecasting (WEF) department of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has developed a tool that sends automatic lightning alerts when a thunderstorm is approaching a WT. These alerts are based on lightning data provided by a global lightning detection network. WEF department post-processes that data on-cloud using Microsoft (MS) Azure Services and triggers them when reaching pre-defined and parametrizable conditions. They have two main objectives: people's safety and assets protection.
