PO122: Floating offshore wind farm micro-siting for LCOE minimisation in variable depth sites

Abstract

Floating offshore wind farms have a great potential but their costs are yet too high to be economically viable without subsidies. In order to reduce the LCOE (levelised cost of energy) of the technology, a method based on the PSO (particle swarm optimisation) is proposed to set the positions of the turbines. The method accurately calculates the LCOE of the farm, considering variable cost of the cable and mooring systems depending on the bathymetry. Furthermore, IEC standards and power flows are used to increase the precision of the AEP (annual energy production) calculation. The results show that the inclusion of the bathymetry in the optimisation is particularly relevant for floating offshore wind farms.
